Rotarians associate the naming of a Paul Harris Fellow as a tribute to a person who has demonstrated a shared purpose with the humanitarian objectives of The Rotary Foundation. The recognition is named after Rotary's founder, the late Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer, who started Rotary with three business associates in 1905.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

This last meeting we had the wonderful privilege of playing audience to a truly powerful and moving speaker author Ivan Backer. Born in Czechoslovakia, Ivan spent his life working to benefit the poor, the disenfranchised, people whose voices were not heard. He is a Hartford activist and holocaust escapee who wrote a memoir "My Train To Freedom: A Jewish Boy's Journey from Nazi Europe to a Life of Activism" that is inspirational!

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

We had an especially enjoyable meeting at Infinity Hall this past Monday. Our President Sandra Duffy presented Judith Green with a Paul Harris Plus Two pin – way to go, Judith! As we enjoyed an amazing kale salad and delicious entrée and killer cannoli cake, we were entertained by Connecticut singer and songwriter Gracie Day (http://www.graciedaymusic.com/), who was later joined by her fellow musician Robert Fullerton (http://www.rcfullerton.com/). Meg Fanion of Infinity Hall also gave a quick tour of the stage itself. This was a fantastic time!

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

We had great meeting at Hands On Hartford this past Monday, July 11. It was the first meeting with our new President Sandra Duffy and she did an AWESOME JOB! We reviewed some Rotary business, such as:
  • Strategic Plan and Club Goals
  • Club dues invoices (which will soon be sent to all members – keep an eye out for it)
  • the importance of paying for missed meals if you RSVP but then don’t show up
  • the Summer Picnic at Sandy Blumer’s house in Southington on August 13 (please RSVP to her if you can attend)

We also inducted Rick Hersom as our newest member – welcome, Rick! Barbara Shaw gave us a full tour of the building and programs of Hands On Hartford – what a kitchen! We started a new 50/50 raffle, and while Judith Green won the chance to pick a card from a full deck, she failed to pick the ace of spades, so the deck will shrink as the pot grows!

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

On this beautiful summer day we had the opportunity to hear from Yard Goats representative Tom Baxter. Tom provided some great information on what kind of events we can expect from the stadium and a peek at when games may begin. We look forward to rooting for the Yard Goats in there first home field game!

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

This meeting we had the opportunity to hear from Harold Sparrow president of the Hartford YMCA.

March 30, 2015

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

It is with great pleasure that I reach out to you today to inform you about a Rotary Spring volunteer project. As coordinator for this project, I have contacted the Knox Parks Foundation to partner on a community garden beautification project. As some of you may recall, last year we prepared garden beds for planting at the Earle Street Community Garden in North Hartford. This year, the Knox Parks Foundation’s May project is to create a new flower bed landscape at the base of the Keney Clock Tower located at the corner of Albany Avenue and Main Street in North Hartford on Saturday, May 16.

Hartford’s Keney Memorial Clock Tower and the small park surrounding it were donated by the Keney brothers in the late 19th century to honor their mother. The Tower is 130 feet tall and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A restoration by the City of Hartford in the 1990’s included replacing gold leaf on the clock face, site improvements and the installation of computerized chimes in the tower.

The Keney Memorial Clock Tower is the gateway to the North Hartford community. This project will create a beautiful and welcoming garden for residents and visitors to enjoy. It will be part of the positive redevelopment activities that are turning this neighborhood into a thriving and vibrant community.

I hope you will consider volunteering to help create a spectacular flower garden at one of the most historic places in Hartford that everyone can enjoy. I have outlined below specific information about the project:
  • Date: Saturday, May 16
  • Time: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Location: Keney Clock Tower, North Hartford. Parking is available on Ely Street which is next to the Clock Tower.
  • Work to be performed: creating a new flower garden landscape…cutting beds, preparing soil for planting, planting flowers and mulching.
  • Breakfast and lunch are provided.
  • Tools will be provided, but you can bring your own (make sure your tools are clearly marked with your name). Knox Park Foundation will not be responsible for lost tools.
  • Attire: wear work clothes, pants (no shorts) and old shoes/sneakers (no flip flops)…you will get dirty.
  • Bring bug spray and sunscreen
  • RSVP: looking for at least 20 volunteers; youth can volunteer, but must be supervised by an adult. Contact Sue Joyse at sjoyse@stfranciscare.org by May 1.
  • Weather: Event will continue in light rain. If event is cancelled due to heavy rain, I will contact you via email.
Thank you so much for your consideration, and I look forward to seeing you on May 16!
Established in 2013 with the effort led by Rotarian Brennden Colbert, the Hartford Rotoract Club shined with stunning presentations at this years District 7890 conference. The conference was held at the Marriott in Downtown Hartford and our young leaders really shocked the district with their professionalism and commitment to making a successful impact in the communities they live and serve.
Rotarian Cate Evans recently joined the Rotary Club of Hartford from South Windsor Rotary Club and shared her story with us about how she became a Rotarian about 20 years ago which goes back to a Group Exchange in Turkey. Rotarians from Turkey showed the group a great time and brought them on tours of local businesses and shared the work that was being done at the time to eradicate polio from that region of the world!

Elected in November 2010, Governor Malloy’s top agenda items have included reinventing our economy by growing jobs, improving public education and stabilizing the state’s finances.

Governor Malloy has pursued a comprehensive economic development strategy, one that invests in growth industries and creates jobs while at the same time defends the core sectors of our economy and protects the jobs we already have.   His three tiered approach makes sure that Connecticut can compete at any level – from large corporations, to small businesses and start-ups.  The First Five program has leveraged $1.7 billion in private sector investments across our state’s economy; that program and others have brought numerous corporate headquarters to Connecticut from out of state, including NBC Sports, Charter Communications, and Jackson Laboratories.  The Small Business Express Programs has invested in more than 700 small businesses across Connecticut, creating and maintaining thousands of jobs.  And the four new “Innovation Ecosystems” located throughout the state are connecting entrepreneurs with capitol investors, cultivating the grassroots of our state’s ideas economy.

The Governor is also making investments in education at every level. In 2012, he signed into law a school reform bill that has been called a national model.  The legislation has provided hundreds of millions of addition money to school districts, in exchange for holistic changes that will prepare students to compete in the 21st century economy.  In 2013, Governor Malloy was proud to push for what some have called a transformational investment in the University of Connecticut.  Next Generation Connecticut will make sure that Connecticut residents are in position to compete for jobs in emerging fields like bioscience and digital media.  Finally, the Governor has also called for and funded the creation of a new Office of Early Childhood to ensure that all our kids have access to a quality early childhood learning experience.

As we grow jobs and improve our schools, the Governor believes we also need to make state government leaner and more efficient. The newly enacted budget builds on the tremendous gains made during the Governor’s first two years in office, improvements that continue to fix the state’s financial foundation without imposing new taxes.  With fewer employees and state agencies than the day he was sworn in and new investments in technology, state government is making the changes necessary to improve the delivery of services without additional costs.

Governor Malloy was proud to sign what some have called the most comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation in the country.

Dannel Patrick Malloy, the youngest of eight children, was born in Stamford, Connecticut on July 21, 1955.  Growing up, he struggled to overcome learning and physical disabilities, eventually gaining the skills he needed to go on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Boston College and continue on to Boston College Law School. In 1982, Governor Malloy married his wife, Cathy, whom he met while at Boston College. They have three sons: Dannel, Ben, and Sam.

Governor Malloy became a prosecutor in Brooklyn, New York, serving for four years as an Assistant District Attorney, where he won 22 convictions in 23 felony cases.  Prior to being elected Governor, he was Stamford's longest serving Mayor, serving for 14 years from 1995 to 2009.

Ted Carroll, president of Leadership Greater Hartford spoke at the Hartford Rotary Club.  He shared with the group the commonality they share in the “Service Above Self” mission statement that bonds all Rotarians, as a similar creed that he shares at LGH.  He explained what it means to be a true leader, and serving the community with projects that help foster civility, that in turn create a positive influence for change in the Hartford area. Developing and implementing leadership through collaborative relationships is what Mr. Carrol explained to the group he likes to see, that brings positive outcomes. As he looked around the room at the members, he saw many familiar faces that have had the opportunity to work/collaborate with Mr. Carrol over the past 30 years.

The Rotary Club of Hartford is affiliated with Rotary International, a worldwide service organization that unites business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build and promote goodwill and peace throughout the world.

Next meeting will be September 8th, at the Hartford Club, 46 Prospect Street, Hartford.

The luncheon meeting starts at 12:00, and there is a 20.00 fee. Public is welcome.

Dr. William Petit visited the Rotary Club of Hartford for fellowship and to talk about all the great things The Petit Family Foundation is working on lately. They have fundraisers that include an Annual Golf Tournament, a 5K Road Race, a motorcycle ride called "Ride For Justice" and an incredible garden project called "Michaela's Garden Project". The money that is raised goes to support three main areas - education, chronic illness, and helping those affected by violence. Grants are awarded to organizations that make the biggest impact in any of these three areas. For more information, please check out there website and support the cause at http://www.petitfamilyfoundation.org/. We would also like to add that the Petit family has a long history being part of the magic of Rotary International.
